The box of solid lines indicates the approximate domain of ISCMs. Vertical dashed line separates approximately coarse illite (CSPs) from interstratified illite–smectite, smectite, thin illite, and their mixtures (LCPs). A number of the CSP anlayses are smaller than that of LCP analyses. Data outside the box are those of chlorite, biotite, and their weathering products admixed with ISCMs. Reference illite data from Weaver and Pollard (1975) and Meunier and Velde (2004), muscovite data from Newman (1987) and Deer et al.
